Boat/Watercraft Regulations

  • All boats/watercraft operated on Reservation waters, except those used for rafting, require a Boat/Watercraft Permit. The Boating/Watercraft Permit is used for fishing purposes only. This includes single-person, non-motorized, inflatable rafts or tubes. Please have the Boat Permit in your possession when you are on Reservation waters.
  • Boating/Watercraft Daily: $5.00
  • Boating/Watercraft 2016 Annual $25.00
  • **With the annual permit you will receive a yearly boat sticker to apply to the front left (port) side of your boat/watercraft.
  • For your safety and others, all boats/watercraft passengers must have a Personal Flotation Devices, PFD’s.
  • All boats/watercraft are restricted to the use of a single electronic motor. Only Sunrise Lake and emergency personnel may have a gasoline motor of up to 10 HP. All gasoline motor boats/watercraft must have a fire extinguisher on board at all times.
  • Please use boat/watercraft launching areas to put a float your boat/watercraft. Towed and board water sports, activities atop water, are prohibited such as tubing, wake boarding, water skiing, body boarding, kite surfing, paddle boarding, skim boarding and windsurfing.

Canyoneering Regulations

  • Canyoneering is any type of hiking or climbing involving the use of technical equipment (pitons, harness, rope, etc.). This activity is only permitted in our Special Use Area (Lower Salt Rivers), therefore requires the Special Use Permit.
  • Special Use: Daily $15.00
  • Canyoneering is restricted to the lower Salt River area, all areas west of the Salt River bridge to the west boundary of the Fort Apache Indian Reservation and from the Salt River to the north rim of the Salt River Canyon. Remember Salt Banks is closed to all non-tribal members.

Hiking, Sightseeing and Picnicing Regs

  • These activities fall under general Outdoor Recreation and require the Outdoor Recreation Daily Vehicle Permit.
  • Outdoor Recreation Daily Vehicle: $9.00
  • HIKING is allowed from designated campgrounds and along perennial streams. Hiking in Special Use Area requires our Special Use Permit. See Special Use regulations.
  • PICNICING - All areas are open to picnicing except Mount Baldy Wilderness area and areas otherwise posted CLOSED. Picnicing in Special Use Area requires our Special Use Permit. See Special Use regulations
  • SIGHTSEEING - All Reservation roads are open to sightseeing vehicles except CLOSED area including the Mount Baldy Wilderness area. Sightseeing in Special Use Area requires our Special Use Permit. See Special Use regulations

Bicycling Regs (non-motorized)

  • Biking is only allowed on established roads only. For your safety and other please do not ride your bikes at night and the activity is closed during the Reservation hunting season. Biking in Special Use Area requires our Special Use Permit. See Special Use regulations
  • Outdoor Recreation Daily Vehicle: $9.00
  • Open areas to biking are Paradise Park, Hawley Lake, Salt River, and Designated campgrounds. Sunrise Park Resort offers various biking trails and competitive mountain coursed during the summer months. For more information call (928) 735-7669

Horseback Ridging Regulations

  • Horseback riding on the Reservation is only allowed to facilities or activities designated for such purposes, such as Outfitters and Tribal sanctioned rodeos, etc.
  • The Reservation offers a licensed/professional outfitter. For more information call Snowy Mountain Stables at (928) 735-7449 or (928) 205-7607

Winter Activities Regulations

  • The following is a list of activities categorized as “Winter Activities”, all activities are covered by a Outdoor Recreation Daily Vehicle Permit.
  • Outdoor Recreation Daily Vehicle: $9.00
  • Cross Country Skiing is allowed at the Sunrise Winter Use Area and the Haystack Area along the old railroad bed.
  • Snow Sledding is allowed at the Sunrise Winter Use Area.
